Finding decent hardware I buy cheap drawer pulls and expensive brass knobs to see where you can actually cut corners. Sometimes a five dollar handle from a hardware store looks completely custom once it is installed. Sometimes it flakes and rusts in a month. I keep track of what holds up to wet hands and daily use.
Countertop reality checks I don’t have a pristine marble kitchen that gets used twice a year. I drop heavy pans, spill coffee, and drag grocery bags across my surfaces. I photograph the scratches and the stains so you know what these materials actually look like after a year of real life.
